Dali Look-a-like 1-11-11

Double Takes

Dali Look-Alike Contest

Friday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.

  • Dali Museum
One Dali Blvd. (Bayshore Boulevard and Fifth Avenue SE), St. Petersburg FL 33701
  • The Dali Museum’s third annual Double Takes event encourages guests to create a vision of who they think Salvador Dali was, and dress up, behave or channel the spirit of the surreal artist. The event is also open to the public. Complimentary snacks will be offered. Winners will be announced at 8 p.m.

The look-alike contest is not celebrity impersonation, the Dali organizers say. Both male and female entrants are encouraged to express and define how they or their work embodies the spirit of Dali. We’re thinking an optical illusion like the one shown might be nice (without the acrobatics, of course!).

  • Some last-minute inspiration:

  • Melting watches: Nah, too obvious. However … his inspiration was a dream of runny Camembert cheese one hot August afternoon. Now you’re talking.

  • Double vision: Like so many of his paintings, what you see depends on how you look at it. How about if you’re Dali on your frontside and his wife Gala on the back? It would explain why he started signing both of their names to his paintings.
Famous images: Do something outrageous with any of these and you have a chance: ants, grasshoppers, a crutch, eggs, burning giraffes, DNA or a cat thrown in mid-air (don’t you dare).

Price: Free for Dali look-alikes and members; $10.
