Firestone Grand Prix 2014

Things are pretty exciting this week in downtown St Pete with the Firestone Grand Prix (formerly known as the Honda Grand Prix) of St Petersburg. It takes place on the waterfront streets and part of the Albert Whitted Airport speeding past condo buildings, airplanes, pubs, a stadium, museums and more. The Grand Prix is among the most respected motorsports event in North America and we have a week-long celebration that includes a parade, celebrity athletes, live entertainment, music, beer garden, autographs sessions, and, of course, some of the fastest race cars.

They started putting up the barricades, fences and closing streets downtown weeks ago in order to prepare for the races. Some residents find this & the noise from the cars unpleasant but most of us love it. I mean how cool is it to drive 5 minutes from one’s house to see major car races downtown!?! I can hear the practice runs and races starting on Friday from my house. But I don’t mind at all, the noise only lasts for 3 days.

The Formula off-Road Series, Indy Lights, Pro Mazada, USF2000 and World Challenge paddocks are open to all ticket purchasing spectators. In the past, I’ve been able to meet some of the drivers and take photos to my heart’s content. Those of you who know me, KNOW that I take LOT of pictures. Everyone has been so nice and there is so much excitement in the air.

I am lucky to have parents whose condos is located in the middle of the racetrack. We go to the 28th floor of the building and can see almost the entire track and enjoy the beautiful marina with Tampa Bay at the same time.

The Illuminated Night Parade starts at 7:30  on Thursday night with floats, krewes, marching bands, neighborhood associations, dance troupes and, of course, some of the Grand Prix drivers in their show cars. Apparently, there has been a light parade in St. Petersburg since 1969! The parade starts at Central Avenue and 5th Street and travels east on Central Avenue, then heads north on 2nd Street, then heads east on 1st Ave North, then north on Beach Drive to 5th Avenue North.
