Look which city made it into the top 20 places to visit this year in the USA according to TripAdvisor!! St Petersburg, Florida!! Yippee! For the last 13 years, I have called St Pete my home. It is surrounded by beautiful water, has gorgeous weather-especially at this time of year, tons of great restaurants representing food from around the world, farmers market, food trucks, unique shops, brew pubs, world famous museums, top-notch galleries, creative murals, waterfront parks, dog parks, boating, sports to watch or partake in, music venues, music festivals, Ribfest, Honda Grand Prix race running through the downtown along the waterfront and so much more. With an average of¬†361 days¬†of sunshine per year, St Pete has the Guinness World Record for logging the most consecutive days of sunshine (768 days). Hmmm, maybe that is why it is nicknamed “The Sunshine City” in the Sunshine State.

I love it here. Come for a visit or to buy a home, I’ll be waiting for you.

DUNEDIN WINES THE BLUES FESTIVAL -Saturday, November 12, 2016 1:00pm

The Tampa Bay Rowdies play FC Cincinnati tonight, Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 7:30pm. They will be playing at Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Okay, I have to admit that I don’t really know that much about soccer and nothing at all about the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open.¬†I know American football, basketball & baseball pretty well. I know enough to follow the basics in soccer so I do hope to learn¬†a bit more tonight when I attend the game. By the way, the Tampa Bay Rowdies were formed in 1974 and have been playing at Al Lang Stadium since 2011. (Nice for me since it’s less than 10 minutes from my house.)

So here’s what I found out about the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup from the Rowdies website, http://www.rowdiessoccer.com/home

“About the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. (Good to know) Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 100-plus-year-old single-elimination tournament.

In a nutshell, the U.S. Open Cup is very similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world. Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country’s league season, are open in the early stages to any club that qualifies, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country has to offer.

Entry into the tournament is staggered by league, with NASL teams entering in the Third Round this year. The Open Cup Final this season is the Eighth Round, so the Rowdies are six wins away from winning the Open Cup. The winner of the match advances to face Columbus Crew SC in Columbus on Wednesday, June 15. And tonight‚Äôs match must produce a winner. If the match is tied after regulation, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played. Regardless of any goals scored in the extra time periods, both 15-minute periods will be played in full. If the match is still tied after 30 minutes of extra time, the match will proceed to penalty kicks to determine a winner.”

Okay, so let’s go Rowdies!! I will be the one wearing¬†green & yellow. Ha ha ha.

When my youngest daughter was here visiting in January, I took her around to see all the cool murals that had arrived since her last visit. We were lucky to witness some of them being painted. I love them. How cool is this?!? A couple of years ago I started taking pictures of them but now there are so many new ones that I NEED to photograph. I told my daughter then that I wanted to write a post about the mural of St Pete as soon as I had time. Obviously, it was a good idea because someone has beaten me to the punch!! Read below & come see them in person.

St. Pete is slowly becoming known for its street art. The Huffington Post recently touted the Burg as one of the Top 15 Street Art Cities in America. Local businesses, neighborhoods and members of the city council have recognized how imperative a thriving arts culture is to the growth and development of the city at large.

Whether exploring the alley behind the 600 Block or Baum Avenue in the EDGE District, literary, mythological and locally inspired designs burst from the brick walls of galleries and shops downtown. Designs have made their way to 4th Street, Uptown, the Grand Central District and Deuces Live. Bar like The Amsterdam have attracted appreciators with their ever rotating gallery of murals.

A few new designs have popped up recently that you need to see for yourself.

This mural by artist David Rothman can be found on the side of the Bay Food Mart between 6th and 7th Avenues North on 4th Street.

Artist Chad Mize adds more than a splash to color to the Historic Uptown area of St. Pete. The neighborhoods new insignia can be found by the Laundromat at 499 7th Avenue North. The mural also features a hex block design inspired by the sidewalks in the neighborhood.

Want to see the process of creating an entirely new vibe in this neighborhood on the rise? Chad Mize created an excellent time lapse showcasing the work that went into the mural.

The 801 Conway has certainly left its mark on the EDGE District and the entire St. Pete community thanks to the skilled hands and minds of the Vitale Brothers. This mural can be found on the side of the former Cafe Adagio building at 1111 Central Avenue.

PizzaBox has made its prescence felt since opening. With a wood-fired oven they built themselves and a striking mural the owners painted, this new restaurant has quickly become a part of the regular St. Pete diet. P.S. Their gluten-free pizza, made with BoBs Red Mill gluten free dough, is amazing. The mural is in the alley behind the restaurant. Their address is 923 Central Avenue.

A muralist by the name of Christy recently added a bit of magic to the 600 Block alley with an enchanted mural. Stephanie Byrne Photography was able to capture this magical design perpendicular to the famous Twiggy Mural by Chad Mize.

A new mural is currently in the works by Deplane Studios and Manmade Murals on the side of Urban Provisions in the Grand Central District. If it’s anything like Urban Brew and BBQ’s historical design, we’re sure it will be a magnificent site to behold. The project is in partnership with Small Town Brewery. Urban Provisions is located at 2410 Central Avenue.

A new mural has been added to the Deuces District by painter/sculptor Patrick Noze. You can view his piece titled “Art Reflecting History” on the side of the Advantage Training Systems building at 833 22nd Street. ¬†South.

Sarah Sheppard completed this gorgeous Alice in Wonderland mural back in February. We hadn’t gotten to see it in person until recently. Gazing at it is trully a transformative experience. You can check it out on the side of China Finders located at 2823 Central Avenue.

Sarah Sheppard isn’t done leaving her mark on the Burg. She also recently completed a mural on the exterior of the new St. Pete Makers facility. For those looking to take what’s brewing in their imagination and make it a reality, this spot is a must visit. St. Pete Makers is located at 429 22nd Street South.

Yippee! It’s here! That time of year when our downtown & waterfront become a major race car track. Actually, there are 6 different kinds of Racing Series that take place during the 3 day event. The drivers & audience come from all over the world. Oh, I can hear them practicing from my house as I write this blog!

IMG_1631

The Verizon IndyCar Series is the premier open-wheel racing series in the United States. It offers one of the most diverse and challenging schedules in motorsports with races held on ovals, permanent road courses and temporary street courses. IndyCar Series has been here since 2005.

Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires is the top step of the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system for drivers and teams striving to compete in the Verizon IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500. Nineteen of the 33 starters in the 2014 Indianapolis 500 were Indy Lights graduates.

IMG_1661 IMG_1665

The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires is the second step on the Mazda Road to Indy, bridging the gap between the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires. The series’ champion is awarded a scholarship package from Mazda to advance to Indy Lights competition the following year.¬†Graduates include Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe and Graham Rahal.

IMG_1403 All of these photos are ones that I took last year in 2015.   IMG_1479

The Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda is the first step on the Mazda Road to Indy. In addition to providing a vital training ground for rising stars, the series champion will earn a scholarship package from Mazda to advance to the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. Drivers who have honed their skills in the series include Indy 500 winners Dan Wheldon, Sam Hornish Jr. and Buddy Rice.

The Pirelli World Challenge Championships is North America’s top production car-based championship. World Challenge is separated into three classes: GT, GTS and Touring Car.

Robby Gordon’s SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks are high-powered off-road trucks that race side-by-side on challenging dirt and asphalt tracks with challenges that include huge jumps, crossovers, whoop sections and many tight corners.

IMG_1402From the 2015 brochure, you can see that the track is right downtown St Pete & then goes along the waterfront in front of the Dali Museum, Old Lang Stadium & the Mahaffey Theater before heading onto the Albert Whitted Airport runway.

The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is not only among the most respected motorsports events in North America and some of the fastest racing series on the planet, you have a chance to see drivers, celebrity athletes, live entertainment and interactive activities. These activities include the

  • Bright House Speed Zone
  • Verizon IndyCar Series Fan Village
  • Beer Gardens
  • Driver Autograph Sessions
  • Interactive games & exhibits
  • Music

So come on down to St Pete & have some great fun! There are shuttles that will take you from the parking lots to the race. Gates open on Friday, March 11 & Saturday, March 12th 7:30am-6pm and on Sunday, March 13th 8am-5pm.

I mean, how awesome is¬†this to have this only 5 minutes from my house? I’m so excited, as I am every year.
